Great to hear Soplos has become your definitive daily driver. And really interesting that Steam games are loading faster than on other distros — with your rig (Ryzen 7 9800 + RTX 5070 Ti) that's a real stress test, so that feedback carries a lot of weight.

Thanks for continuing to share your experience in such detail, it's really appreciated. Enjoy the gaming!

Glad to hear the Flatpak version of Proton VPN (4.17.1) is running smoothly and the slowness is completely gone. And awesome that Steam + gaming works well on Soplos too — good to know for other users with similar rigs (Ryzen + RTX 50-series).

Thanks for sticking with it and for the detailed follow-ups along the way, it really helps us and other users troubleshoot similar issues. Enjoy Soplos, and feel free to pop back in anytime!

Thanks for the extra details and screenshots — that clears things up!

That password prompt you're seeing ("System policy prevents modification of network settings for all users") is the standard PolicyKit (polkit) authentication dialog. It shows up because Proton VPN's kill switch (
pvpn-killswitch
) needs to modify system network configuration, and that requires privileged authentication — this is completely normal on any Linux distro using NetworkManager, not something specific to Soplos. Proton itself asks for this every time you connect, as you mentioned.

So to sum up:

Password prompt during system updates → expected (PackageKit/pkexec)

Password prompt when Proton VPN connects (kill switch) → expected (polkit), same behavior you'd see on any distro

Browser/update slowness → this one is worth digging into further

Glad to hear switching Proton VPN client versions seemed to fix the slowness! Just to confirm — is everything running smoothly now on Soplos, or did the slow browsing/updates come back at all? If it happens again, it'd help to know:

Which Proton VPN version/package you're using now (Flatpak, .deb, etc.)

Whether the slowness happens with the VPN connected, disconnected, or both

Thanks for testing so many distros and giving Soplos a real shot — glad you're liking it overall!

Regarding the VPN issue, that's not expected behavior — normal users shouldn't need root to start a VPN connection on Soplos.

Could you tell us which VPN client/software you're using?

NetworkManager with a VPN plugin (openvpn/wireguard/openconnect)

A standalone client (e.g.
openvpn
or
wg-quick
via CLI)

A commercial app (ProtonVPN, Mullvad, NordVPN, etc.)

That'll help us pinpoint whether it's a permissions/polkit issue or something specific to that client's setup.
